Untitled Batwa Pygmy Project
The Untitled Batwa Pygmy Project documents a young medical student’s journey into the heart of rural Africa to volunteer at a community health clinic run by a retired American physician. Through his experiences there, the film examines the question of why, after 30 years and billions of dollars of aid effort to Africa, have many regions of this troubled part of the globe grown statistically worse? The project, both a social justice film and a character study, takes on some of the most troubling problems in Africa on a micro level. Through the eyes of a westerner, the Untitled Batwa Pygmy Project explores the beautiful strangeness of Africa as well as its great potential for both hope and disaster.
Utilizing a fly-on-the-wall style of filmmaking, UBPP manages to capture a more intimate look at the often tenuous relationship between the first and third world as seen from the perspective of its young protagonist. The film juxtaposes gorgeous natural imagery from just outside the Bwindi Impenetrable Rainforest with scenes of crippling poverty and loss. As the story pushes its way through the conflicts, setbacks, and small victories of life in an African health clinic, the question persists, is there a better way?
UBPP is the first documentary feature produced by Lifefinder Films, a company comprised of the producing talents of Matthew Amenta, Jeremy L. Balon, and Ted Reilly. Principle photography on the film wrapped in late June 2007 and included locations in West Hartford, CT, Brooklyn, NY, and Southwestern Uganda. The project is currently in the editing phase of post-production, with hopes of entering the major film festival circuit by August of 2008.
