Watch the Pallino
Watch the Pallino

Around the turn of the century, it was the promise of jobs that drew some 15 million immigrants to small town, rural America. In Toluca, Illinois, several ethnic groups worked shoulder to shoulder in the coal mines, but it was the Italians who left their mark. Today, the town boasts of a thriving ravioli factory, regionally known pasterias, and most of all bocce ball. Each year on Labor Day, Toluca hosts what is arguably the largest bocce tournament of its kind in the country. Roads, front yards and railroad gravel transform into courts to accommodate players from across the U.S. Family and friends return to compete for the grand prize—and to share a bit of history along the way. Follow Father Neri, a bocce playing priest, the jocular Shirley and State champs Theresa and Nancy Biagini in their quest to make the final round. Who will triumph? You’ll have to Watch the Pallino.
