Why A Volunteer?
What would you sacrifice to help street children in a war torn country, to assist communities struggling under overwhelming poverty, to empower disabled people thrown aside by society, and to save an animal on the verge of extinction? WHY A VOLUNTEER is a thought-provoking journey to the four corners of the world searching for answers to the question of why ordinary people choose to do extraordinary work in the face of cultural, environmental, and political challenges. Intimate conversations and glimpses into day to day struggles paint vivid portraits of true heroes. Their status as heroes is frequently underappreciated by celebrity obsessed culture. Their international work in this ever shrinking global community reinforces the connection between human beings. Through time spent in Afghanistan, India, Borneo, and Ecuador with grassroots organization, this inspiring film reveals the motivations and passions of courageous people dedicated to improving the human condition.
This film is the story of ordinary people doing extraordinary work as volunteers in four different parts of the world. The film focuses on volunteers in an NGO for street children in Afghanistan, an NGO in Ecuador blending new technology with traditional, indigenous ways to provide support for the impoverished, a “volun-tourism” organization in Borneo saving the endangered orangutans and their rain forest environment, and an interfaith community in Kolkata empowering mentally disabled people to be contributing members of society. The film peels back the psychological layers such as motivations, emotions, and thoughts to reveal the heart of the individual volunteer. Specifically, the film highlights the work of under-reported, under-appreciated individuals and grass roots organizations that could not function without volunteers.
Why A Volunteer? sheds light on the psychological processes of what leads a person to volunteer. How did this person get to be at this place at this time? This film highlights the histories, tragedies, victories, and passion of individuals and small groups that took matters into their own hands and committed themselves to improve the human condition, frequently at great personal cost to themselves.
Filming takes place at four distinctly different locations where grass roots organizations are working on the front lines of critical world problems. The film makers spend time with each group of volunteers, documenting the specifics of the issues and the people who have dedicated their lives to making a difference in each particular area. Through this first hand experience, a rich, genuine story about these courageous people unfolds. A special emphasis is placed on the question of why someone would dedicate their life in such a way and how that information can be used to inspire others toward similar, if not as dramatic, action.
