“The world does not understand me and I do not understand the world. That is why I have retired from the world” – Paul Cezanne’s thought written on the white wall of Prof. Ruschukliev’s studio in the town of Veliko Tarnovo. Retired? Yes – retired from banal standards, from the pretences of the loud mediocrity, from false friendships and obliging colleagues…He has retired to the unforged world of his works, from where he can contemplate the universe at one time or watch the fun at another. And although he has retired he has not ceased to be challenging, willful, ironic, and sentimental – he has not ever ceased to be himself. Never has commercial art been more contempted, more disregarded.
Prof. Nikolay Ruschukliev has painted more than 100 self- portraits as an expression of his protest against mercantile art rather than self- obsession. Self- portrait as a genre is the hardest painting to sell- a paining that refuses to be used as currency. His benches, his boats, his alleys urge the audience to ponder upon what the times that we live in take away by giving us so many cheap and available replacements to art. His landscapes show us that silent nature is the only place where some things are still sacred. Even nude bodies in his paintings are represented in nature’s attire beyond eroticism- more like a church left by its congregation.
